Alex Nikolov alone was not enough, Zaverche is two games away from the final four after a 3-0 win in Civitanova

Cucine Lube Civitanova lost to Polish Warta Zawiercie 0:3 (22:25, 16:25, 29:31) and failed to find rhythm in the first two sets, missing a real chance to bring intrigue back into the match in the third.
Alex Nikolov was among the most active for the Italian team, finishing with 17 points, but even that was not enough for Lube against the more stable and disciplined guest squad. Thus, in practice, the Polish team is two sets away from qualifying for the Final Four in Turin. The return match is on April 2, with Lube needing a 3:0 or 3:1 victory to force a "golden" set.

First Set

Lube fell behind early, 1:3 and 1:5, after Alex Nikolov made an attacking error, and the hosts struggled to organize their offense. Bottolo contributed with a pipe for 4:6, and Alex's first point came for 5:7.
Zawiercie maintained their lead until the middle of the set, and a series of service errors from both sides prevented Lube from getting into a stable rhythm. An ace by Bonifante brought the hosts closer to 14:15, but then the Poles pulled ahead again and reached 19:16.
Towards the end, Nikolov reduced the deficit with an attack for 18:20, and then scored another point for 22:24, but Lube failed to turn the tide and lost 22:25.

Second Set

The second set started evenly until 5:5, when Nikolov scored his sixth point in the match. After that, however, Zawiercie exerted pressure with serve and block, and Lube began to accumulate attacking errors.
At 6:10, Lube's coaching staff called a timeout, but the guests continued to control the proceedings. Alex Nikolov tried to keep the team in the set, but attacking errors by the hosts and the Poles' stable play increased the difference to 11:19.
Towards the end, Lube only managed to partially reduce the distance, before Zawiercie closed the set at 25:16 after a service error by Erik Loeppky.

Third Set

The third set was the most contested of the match and lasted 35 minutes. Zawiercie took the lead again, and Alex Nikolov started the set with an attacking error for 0:2. Lube gradually equalized to 6:6 after a block, but immediately after that, the guests regained the initiative.
An ace by Gladyr for 11:9 and a subsequent ace by Tavares for 14:10 gave the Poles a significant lead. Lube, however, did not give up. Alex Nikolov kept the team in the game, and a series of points brought the hosts back to 17:18.
The most dramatic moments came at the end. Alex Nikolov equalized for 21:21, and then brought a lead of 22:21. The set went into extra points, where Lube was close to success several times but failed to close it out. At 29:29, Alex Nikolov was blocked for 29:30, and in the next long rally, he attacked out of bounds. After a video review with no block recorded, the match concluded at 29:31.

Individual Statistics

Team Player Points +/- Attack %
Lube Alex Nikolov 17 +6 49%
Lube Loeppky 11 - -
Lube Bottolo 9 - -
Zawiercie Russell 12 - -
Zawiercie Kwolek 10 - -
Zawiercie Bieniek 9 - -
Zawiercie Boladz 8 - -

Alex Nikolov was the top scorer for Lube and the only one with a clearly positive balance (+6) and nearly 50% attack efficiency. However, the lack of sufficient support from the other outside hitters limited the potential of the Italian team. For Zawiercie, the distribution of points was more even – four players with between 8 and 12 points, which indicates a better balance in attack.

Team Statistics

Category Lube Zawiercie
Blocks 5 3

Positive Reception 39% 52%

The numbers clearly show why the match ended in three sets. Lube even had an advantage in blocks (5:3) and minimally more attack points (41:40), but the key differences came from other elements.
Zaverce dominated in reception (52% vs. 39%), which allowed them a more organized and effective game in attack (59%). Additionally, the Poles were significantly more disciplined on serve " only 14 errors against Lube's 22, while also scoring more aces (4:1).
The most significant factor, however, were the points from opponent's errors ", 34 against 20. This indicates that Lube gave away too many points, which practically negated their relatively even play in attack and tipped the balance in favor of Zaverce.
